    Grow

    Why I Grow

Growing my own food is one of the most deeply satisfying parts of my life. There’s something profoundly grounding about stepping outside, picking something fresh from the garden, and knowing exactly where it came from. I grew up in a world where convenience foods ruled the table — Tyson chicken breasts, boxed dinners, quick fixes. There wasn’t much thought, gratitude, or connection to what we ate.

    But growing changes everything.

When you raise food yourself, there’s a respect that forms naturally — for the soil, for the work, and for the food that nourishes you. It’s not just about organic labels or health trends. Sure, eating organically grown food right from your own backyard has tremendous health benefits, but it’s about something deeper: gratitude. Intention. A real understanding of the value of what we put into our bodies.

Growing food is also physical. It’s hard work, no doubt about it. But it’s good work. It’s satisfying work. It’s the kind of work that makes you tired in the best way, and proud in the purest way. Watching a garden grow — watching bees buzz through the flowers, birds and insects come to life, vegetables reach for the sun — it’s like watching the land breathe and thrive right in front of you. It’s not just about the harvest; it’s about the entire cycle of life that gardening invites onto your land.

It’s not always easy. It takes time, effort, and yes, some cost. But even the smallest garden — even one or two raised beds — can change a life. I recently gave raspberry plants to a woman in my community who’s just starting her first two 4×4 garden beds, one for strawberries and one for raspberries. She was thrilled, and I know those simple beds will make a real difference for her and her kids. Growing your own food, even just a little, connects you to the world in a way that’s hard to put into words.

For me, it’s a way of living with more purpose, more health, and more joy. It’s about growing a feast — not just for the body, but for the soul.

What You’ll Find at The Savage Feast About Growing

At The Savage Feast, you’ll find a collection of tips, tricks, techniques, and timing for the things we grow. We’ve been gardening for over 20 years now — and let’s be honest, we’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way. A lot of what we’ve learned has been through trial and error, and over time, we’ve developed some smart, practical solutions that save time, energy, and frustration.

Our philosophy is about working smarter, not harder — because gardening should be satisfying, not exhausting. We want to help you avoid the overwhelm, dodge the common pitfalls, and set up a garden that you love working in. Whether you’re planting onions, sowing peas, or just starting your first raised bed, the lessons we’ve learned can help you find more joy (and fewer weeds) in the process.

Gardening doesn’t have to be a burden. It can be one of the most rewarding parts of your life — and we’re here to help make it that way.
